몇 년 전 시장이 호황일때만 하더라도 많지는 않지만 정말로 열심히 준비하신 분들은 Finance background 가 없더라도 성공적으로 Finance market 에 진입하신 분들이 더러 있었습니다. 하지만....

지금깥은 Bear market 에서는 솔직히 매우매우 어렵다고 보시는 것이 맞을거 같습니다. 이것을 한국인과 미국인의 관점에서 얘기한다면...

우선 한국 분들의 경우 작년/올해를 보았을 때 Finance background 를 가지지 않고 Finance market 에 들어간 경우는 거의 보지를 못했습니다. (이건 제 개인적인 경험인만큼 다른 분들의 견해도 들어보시기 바랍니다) Finance background 없이 들어간 경우는 Global Consulting Firm 출신들뿐 입니다. 작년에 HK 의 IB 에서 인턴하신 한국 분들이 저 포함해서 대략 7명쯤 되는데 이 중 Consulting Firm 출신이 4명정도 되고, 나머지 3분은 국내 Finance 경력 있는 분들이었던 걸로 기억합니다. 올해 HBS 및 Sloan 2010 분들 중에서 Finance 쪽에 들어가신 분들도 Consulting 출신 혹은 그 이전에 국내 은행, 회계 법인, PE, 외국계 IB 출신들입니다. 이것은 이 분들이 준비를 정말 열심히 한 탓도 있지만, Market 의 Demand 가 워낙에 적은 탓에 채용 회사들 입장에서도 배경이 전혀 없는 사람을 뽑는 Risk taking 을 하기보다는 안전하게 어느 정도 검증이 된 사람들을 뽑고자 하는 것도 있고, 예전 같으면 지원 안했을 좋은 배경의 사람들이 많이 지원을 해서 상대적으로 약해 보이는 Career Change 그룹이 불이익을 당하고 있는 것입니다. 

 미국 친구들의 경우...한국 분들보다는 Career change 에 성공한 친구들이 간혹 보입니다. IT Enginner 하다가 Banker가 된 친구, IT Consukting 하다가 옮기 친구 등등. 하지만, 이 친구들도 상당히 힘든 것이 현실이고, 예전에는 보지도 않았을 2nd tier 의 Middle market focused IB 도 열심히 찾고 있다는 것이죠. 미국 친구들 외의 International student 들 역시 힘든 상황이어서 미국내 취직보다는 주로 싱가폴/HK 쪽으로 알아보는 형편이지만 이 역시 쉽지 않습니다. 그래도, 제 친구들 중에 필리핀에서 온 친구는 Boston 의 Jeffries 라는 Middle market IB 에서 인턴을 했고(IT business 배경), 태국에서 온 친구(전직이 Finance job은 아니었던 거 같습니다)는 JP Morgan Singapore 의 Sales&Trading 에서 인턴을 했던 것으로 기억합니다. 한국 분들도 예외를 만들수 있겠죠.

 하지만, 이 모든 상황은  이것은 지금의 최악의 시장상황에서 그러한 것이고, 질문 올려주신 분께서 시장의 상황이 조금 풀리는 시점에 MBA진학 하셔서 Job 을 구하신다면 얼마든지 변할 수 있는 것입니다. 다만, 중요한 것은 내가 얼마나 Career change 를 위해서 All-in 할 것이냐 입니다. Career change 를 위해서는 네트워킹, 파티 등 MBA 에서 즐길 수 있는 상당 부분을 어느 정도 희생해야 가능할 것입니다.

 너무 제가 비관적인 얘기만 쓴 거 같아서, 한마디 드리자면 어쨋든 최선을 다해서 노력하면 최고의 결과는 아니더라도 차선의 결과를 얻을 수는 있을 것이라는 얘기입니다.
