제가 Consulting 을 시작하게 된 이유는 간단합니다. Business 를 시작하는데 있어서 Consulting 이 가장 적합한 곳이라고 생각했기 때문입니다. Consulting 을 통해 얻을 수 있는 다양한 경험, Logical thinking, Network 등등은 어떤 산업군에서도 얻기 어려운 Asset 이라는 생각을 하게 되었습니다. 특히나, 젊은 시절에 수많은 경영진, CEO 들과 접촉하면서 얻을 수 있는 무형의 자산은 가치를 매기기 어려울 것입니다. 장기적으로 제 사업을 하고 싶다는 생각이 강했기 때문에 Consulting 에서의 경험이 제가 향후 제 사업을 하는데 있어서 좋은 밑거름이 될 것으로 판단했습니다.

 방법은 특별한 것이 없었습니다. 특히나, 제가 지원할 당시(2001년 가을)만 하더라도 얻을 수 있는 정보의 양이란 것이 극히 제한적이었기 때문에, 그야말로 수많은 시행착오를 겪을수 밖에 없었습니다. 따라서, 제 경험을 얘기하기보다는 지금 지원하는 학생들의 예를 들어서 설명을 드리는 것이 낫지 않을까 싶네요. 우선, 아직 재학생이시라면 각 대학마다 존재하는 컨설팅 관련 동아리를 가입하시거나 친구들을 통해서 그쪽에서 생성되는 정보를 최대한 얻기 바랍니다. 솔직히 개인적으로 이러한 동아리들에 대해서 저는 좋게 생각하지는 않지만, 요즘의 Trend 는 이러한 동아리 출신분들이 많이 들어오는 편인 듯 싶네요. 하지만, 이런 동아리를 가입하지 못했다고 불이익이 있는 것은 아닙니다. 다만 정보의 소스 차원에서 이런 동아리에 가입한다면 좀 더 다양한 정보를 얻을 수 있지 않을까 싶습니다.

그리고, 평소에 본인의 Logical thinking 을 훈련하시기 바랍니다. 어떠한 Case 가 되었건, 문제가 되었건 비판적인 사고로 항상 Why? 를 생각하시면서 본인의 Logic 으로 설명하려고 노력하시기 바랍니다. 또한, 공대생으로서 가져야할 최소한의 경영 지식 혹은 Trend 는 숙지하시기 바랍니다. 물론 비 상대 생들에게 고도의 경영 지식을 요구하지는 않습니다만, 본인이 Consultant 가 되고자 한다면 자연스럽게 경영 분야의 다양한 Trend 나 지식들에 대해서 관심을 갖게 될 것이라 생각합니다. 그리고, 가능하다면 어떤 Consulting firm 이라도 좋으니 RA 혹은 Intern 으로 일할 기회를 찾아보시기 바랍니다. 요즘 각 Firm 마다 프로젝트에서 RA 들을 채용해서 학생들에게 다양한 기회를 제공하고 있으니 잘 알아보시면 분명 기회가 있을거 같네요. 이 정도면 어느 정도의 준비가 되었다고 볼 수 있을 것입니다. 이후에는 Case interview 준비와 본인의 실력에 따라 달라지겠죠.

 경로는 특별한 것이 없습니다. 정규 채용 프로세스(Bain 의 경우 일년에 두번, 봄/가을)에 지원하여 Case Interview 를 보통 2-3번의 라운드(한번에 2명의 인터뷰)를 거쳐 채용하게 됩니다. 다만 지원 준비 경로는 위에서 설명드린 것들을 참고하시기 바랍니다.
